Bay View Cottage History

The original house, which stood on this site was built by Alfred S. Kelley, the 8th child of Sara and Datus Kelley, probably around 1865. It is said to have been similar in style to the present William D. Kelley House on Water Street. Mr. Kelley was involved in a number of different enterprises including the operation of The Lodge, presidency of the Lake Erie Steam Boat Company, and the ownership, according to an inventory of his property, of a “Ball Alley Building”. This may have been in connection with his father’s hotel west of his land, and may later have been used by Adam Schardt in his hotel operation to the east of this land.
Shortly after the death of his wife, Hannah Starr Kelley in 1889, Mr. Kelley left the island selling his home to William R. Moysey. Born in Mansfield, Ohio 1854, Mr. Moysey was the son of the island landowner and grape grower, Robert L. Moysey. Like his father, William was a grape grower and was Secretary of the Sweet Valley Wine Co. His house burned in 1896, and on its site he built the present structure which he and his wife, Elizabeth, operated as a hotel known as the “Bayview”. After William’s death, the hotel continued operation first under Elizabeth then the son, Robert F., until about 1950. The next owner and operator was William Overcasher who had previously spent many summers on the island before his retirement here. He was mayor of Kelleys Island from 1957-1965.

William and Alice Finger purchased the house in 1972 and spent their summers on Kelleys Island enjoying the house and porch. Gary and Jackie Finger moved into the house approximately 1997, after William and Alice’s passing and began to clean her up through out the years and added the dock 10 years later and the great room addition 15 years later.  The House has been put back together as she was originally intended,  to be a Hotel and/or Rental Cottage. It is bitter sweet to be leaving,  but we are ready for the next smaller chapter...and ready to share this Island Treasure...

She is ready for guests and to share her beauty and history for generations to come...
